WASHINGTON—The United States military executed 14 German Prisoners of War in 1945. The men were hanged at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, KS, the military’s only maximum-security prison. To date, no other foreigner has been executed by order of U.S. military court.
The Germans were convicted at court martial for murdering three fellow prisoners caught spying for the Americans. The revenge killings took place at three different camps, but after their trials, the soldiers were transferred to Fort Leavenworth to die.
The 14 men were hanged with their accomplices: five on July 10, two on July 14 and seven on August 14. They were buried in the back row of the prison cemetery.
The prison still house male soldiers with long-term sentences, including those on death row. The last military execution took place in 1961, though last summer President George W. Bush approved the execution of a soldier who has been on death row since 1988.
